Lois J. Weeks, 71, Lawrence, Kan., died Nov. 23, 2018, following a battle against pancreatic cancer. She was born in Beloit Jan. 6, 1947, to James Leland Bartley Sr. and Doris Eileen Miller Bartley. She grew up on a farm in the West Branch community of Jewell County. She graduated from Esbon High School and later from Fort Hays State University. Following her graduation from college, Lois moved to Downs. She was a teacher at Esbon High School before working at the Downs National Bank.
In 1991, Lois moved to Lawrence. She worked for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (now the Department for the Children and Families) in multiple capacities, rising to the position of budget director prior to her retirement.
Lois enjoyed time with her children and grandchildren and was a diehard KU Jayhawk sports fanatic. She had a close bond with her siblings and travelled with them on many special adventures in her later years.
Survivors include a son, Lance, and his wife, Rebecca, Lawrence, Kan.; a daughter, Mrs. Luke Whittemore (Laurie), Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren Judson, Ashton, Avery, Samuel, Nathan and Benjamin; three sisters, Mrs. Roger Nitsch (Nancy), Hunter, Mrs Joe Arneson (Janice), Lawrence, and Mrs. Tom Tucker (Geneva). Lawrence; and a brother, Jim, and his wife, Kathy, Bartley, Grand Island.
Her funeral was held Nov. 27 at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
Pat BoyerPat Boyer, 74, Fort Morgan, Colorado, died Nov. 15, 2018, after battling a rare form of leukemia for two years. He was born Oct. 25, 1944. in Portland, Ore., to Melvin and Nelva Boyer. Although his legal name was Kelvin Ray, his dad nicknamed him Pat and it stuck for life.
The family moved from Oregon to Formoso. Kan., when Pat was 13. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1963. He attended Kansas State University majoring in animal science and was on the collegiate rodeo team riding bulls and bareback and also competed in professional rodeos.
After graduating in 1970, he served in various positions with the Kansas Department of Agriculture, was executive secretary for Kansas Pork Producers and a marketing representative for Becker Manufacturing in Downs before moving to Fort Morgan, Colo., in 1980. He served as the parks superintendent and forestry superintendent for the City of Fort Morgan and later was an environmental health representative for Northeast Colorado Health Department, retiring in 2003. In retirement, he started Boyer's Bushes specializing in xeric landscaping and wildlife habitat and also had a hunting equipment business.
Pat and his wife, Luann, were married nearly 49 years enjoying free time fishing and hunting at their cabin at Red Feather Lakes, Colo., and their Wyoming Prairie Ghost Ranch as well as in other western states and Canada.
Survivors include his wife. Luann; nieces, Pam Boyer, Salina, Kan., and Tina Reed, Brookville, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Michael, and his wife, Betty; and nephew, Ivan Boyer. His funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019. at Fort Morgan, Colo..

Bob Rose
Bob Rose was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Jewell County, Kan., to Mabel Dyas. Mabel and Bob lived in Jewell for nine years while Mabel worked for the phone company. In 1939, Mabel met Arnold Rose, and they were united in marriage. Arnold, Ma-bel and Bob began their lives together south of Ionia, Kan. where they began the Rose family farm. Bob grew up hunting and exploring along the Limestone Creek that ran through the farm. Bob rode his pony to and from Harmony, a small one-room school house located a half mile from their home.
After graduating high school, he met the love of his life, Jean Simmelink. Bob and Jean were united in marriage on April 1, 1951. To this union, one son and two daughters were born.
Bob enjoyed hunting quail behind his Brittany bird dog that he affectionately called Candy. Bob and his friend, Joe Patterson, also liked to set bank lines along the Solomon River, and run trot lines in the White Rock creek near Lovewell Reservoir. Bob acquired his pilot license in 1977, along with his wife, Jean.
Bob and Jean took time for family trips in an old hearse Bob had converted into a camper for his family. The family made trips to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park. They even pulld the family boat all the way to Florida.
Bob was proud of the hog farm the the family built from humble beginnings.
One of Bob's favorite things to do was to snap pictures of Jean when she was least expecting it. He enjoyed a good practical joke, especially if he was not the one on the receiving end.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Mabel Rose; and his brother, Tim Rose. He is survived by his wife, Jean, Beloit; son, Rod and wife Rita Rose, Ionia; daughters, Tammy, and her husband, Bob Lee, Culver, Kan., and Sylvia and her husband, Bobby Leach, Gunnison, Colo.; grandchildren, Marty Rose, Ryan Lee, and Luke Albritton; great-grandchildren, Dakota and Collin Rose; and two great-great-grandchildren, Aurora and Asher.
His funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Ionia Methodist Church. Visitation was from 1 to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the church, Perdue House or Solomon Valley Hospice. Roberts Family Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Shawn Gouldie
Shawn Thomas Gouldie, 56, was born Feb. 5, 1962, at Osborne, Kan., to Jim and Velma (Johanek) Gouldie. He died Dec. 2, 2018, at his home in Memphis, Tenn.
Shawn attended kindergarten in Osborne and then moved with his parents and older brothers, Jim and Tim, to Mankato, Kan., where he continued grade and high school. He graduated from Mankato High School with the Class of 1980.
Shawn attended and received an associate degree from Cloud County Community College in 1982. He then returned to Mankato where he was employed by Midway Co-op. Upon his brothers' graduation from Kansas State University in 1983, he decided to continue his education. He graduated from Kansas State University on May 16, 1987, with a bachelor of science degree in milling science and management.
Through his work, Shawn lived in Minnesota, Ohio, Florida, California, Arizona, Virginia and lastly Memphis, Tenn., where he was employed by Riviana Foods, Inc., as warehouse manager.
While in Virginia, he met and married C. Kyong Thiel on Nov. 4, 2006. They later divorced.
Shawn liked to play sports in grade and high school with his friends and teammates, and especially liked to hunt with his brothers, the Newell boys and his cousins, the Beam brothers.
Shawn was considerate of his co-workers and would work their holiday shifts so they could be home with their families.
Like his uncle, Eldon Johanek, Shawn liked to tease his nephew, Jake, and niece, Ali ,when they were young. Later his great niece, Harper, and great nephew, Owen, caught the teasing.
Whenever Shawn came home for a visit, he had time to make his rounds looking up and visiting old friends and school mates.
A memorial Mass was held Tuesday, Dec.11, 2018 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Mankato, Kan. His ashes will be laid to rest in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Cemetery, Esbon, Kan., at a later date.
Shawn will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by parents, Jim and Velma Gouldie, Mankato, Kan.; a brother, Jim, and his wife, Kathy Gouldie, Ovid, N.Y.; a brother, Tim, and his wife, Denise Gouldie, Buhler, Kan,; a niece, Allison Gouldie, Buffalo, N.Y.; nephew, Jacob, and his wife, Nichole; great-niece, Harper; and great-nephew, Owen Gouldie, all of Inman, Kan.
James A. Vaughan
James A. Vaughan III, 71, of Mankato, Kan., died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018.
He was born in Chicago, Ill., Nov. 4, 1947, the son of the late Betty Ruth (Brackeen) and James A. Vaughan Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Debra; a daughter, Francis Wood, and her husband. Steve, Westchester, Pa.; a son, James A. Vaughan IV, and his wife, Jana, Mankato, Kan.; and sisters J.A. Mar-quez and husband, Dan, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Karen Cruson and husband Billy, El Dorado, Texas.
He is also survived by grandchildren, James and Julia Wood, Cedric Balentine and Cynthia Vaughan.
A funeral is not planned at this time, as cremation was chosen.

Leonard Kucera
Leonard J Kucera, Jr. 71, of Deweese died last Wednesday at the Grand Island Veterans Hospital. A graveside service with military rites will be held at a later date.
Leonard was born May 21, 1947, to Leonard and Esther (Kuhn) Kucera at Columbus, Neb. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1965 and was inducted into the Army. He served with distinction and honor in C Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry. He was assigned to the headquarters platoon as a mechanic. He was crossed trained and came to be associated with 1st Platoon. He received the Bronze Star for Valor during TET. Upon his return from Vietnam, he graduated from the University of Nebraska ag school at Curtis.
On March 27, 1971, he married Colleen Borwege. at the St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. He retired after 35 years working at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in cattle operations. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings.
He competed in bareback riding and was a team roper. He taught Colleen how to rope.
Survivors include his wife, Colleen Kucera; and two sisters, Darlene Ungles, Humphrey, and Mrs. John Jones (Lana), Lincoln, Neb.

Vernoye Bargen
Vernoye Gwendola (Bishop) Bargen, 105, the oldest of six children, of Benjamin Harrison and Ruie Olive (Preston) Bishop was born Sept. 18, 1913, in rural Nuckolls County, Nebraska. She died last Tuesday.
She graduated with the Class of 1930 from Superior High School. She continued her education at Kearney State College and taught at a country school for four years.
On April 3, 1934, Vernoye and Eilert Ernest Fredrick Bargen were united in marriage at the home of her parents in Hebron. The couple lived on a farm before moving to their home in Superior in 1954.
Vernoye was a long-time member of Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML) and the Retired Teachers. She and Eilert enjoyed playing cards with friends. Vernoye was also an avid gardener and proud of her roses.
She entered the Good Samaritan Society's Superior home in November, 2010.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Jan. 2, 1997; an infant brother, Garland "Ben" Bishop; brothers Reece and and Duane Bishop; sisters Mrs. James butterfield (Vivian) and Mrs. Harlan Meyer (Kathryne).
She is survived by her son, Victor Bargen of Mankato; a granddaughter, Kendra Bargen of Hastings; and a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Bargen of
Hebron.
Her funeral will be held at Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior. The Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ilene Aurand
Ilene Charlotte Anna Aurand, the daughter of Henry and Martha
(Vienop) Fangmeyer, was born on Oct. 1, 1928, in Deshler, Neb. She died
on Oct. 29, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Center at Superior, Neb., at the
age of 90 years and 28 days.
Ilene attended school, graduating from Chester High School. She was united
in marriage to Ward Aurand on Aug. 8, 1987, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church
in Hardy, Neb.
Ilene was employed at Big Byron Agra Services in Byron, and Hardy State
Bank as a bookkeeper.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hardy, their Ladies Aide,
which is now Lutheran Church Women, the Women's Club in Hardy and the American
Legion Auxiliary. She was a Girl Scout leader from Brownies to Senior Scouts
and was a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and taking
care of her flower garden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Clifford Fangmeyer;
nephew, Paul Fangmeyer; and son-in-law, Sonny Payne.
Survivors include her husband, Ward Aurand, of Courtland, Kan.; daughter,
Shirley Payne, of Hastings, Neb.; and son, Steve Hespen, and wife, Judy,
of Carriere, Miss.; her brother, Orville Fangmeyer, and wife, Sharon, of
Twentynine Palms, Calif.; four grandchildren, Michael Fry, Marti Spitz and
husband, Dale, Hunter Hespen and Haley Hespen; five great-grandchildren,
Brett Kehn, T.J. Sorensen, and Chloe, Zhoe and Kelsie Fry; other relatives
and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at 2 p.m., from the
Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Neb., with The Rev. Breen Marie Sipes
officiating.
Music was "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace,"
solo by Stephanie Thayer, with Carlita Price as the organist.
Visitation was held on Nov. 2, 2018, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Pallbearers were Myron Eitzmann, Monte Dahl, Jack Clark, Dennis Lauritzen,
Clay Aurand and Wes Clark.
Interment was in the Rosemound Cemetery, south Hardy, Neb.
Memorials are suggested to go in care of the family, to be designated at
a later date.

William Daugherty
William Elmer "Bill" Daugherty, Jr., 71, of Salina, died Thursday
at his home. The son of William Elmer Daugherty, Sr., and Lois Evelyn (Garton)
Daugherty, he was born June 8, 1947, in Superior. He graduated from Republic
High School and then Emporia State University.
Following his education, he served with the United States Air Force for
21 years until his retirement and honorable discharge. After his service,
he returned to the Republic County area, where worked at Pizza Hut in Belleville
and the Green Lantern in Salina.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Wilma J. Willenborg.
Survivors include three brothers, Alan Daugherty of San Antonio,Texas, Clifford
Daugherty of Phoenix, Ariz., and Melvin Daugherty of Topeka; one sister,
Evelyn Daugherty, of Topeka; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many
friends.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Bachelor-Surber Memorial
Chapel, Belleville, with Pastor Roger Walls officiating. Interment will
be at the Union Valley Cemetery, rural Belleville. Military graveside rites
will be conducted by the McConnell Air Force Base Honor Guard. Bachelor-Surber
Funeral Home, Belleville, is in charge of the arrangements.
Kenny Eggers
Kenneth Eugene Eggers (Kenny) died Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, in Marysville,
Kan. He was 86 years old. He is sorely missed and was loved by so many.
Kenny is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Jo Ann (Johnson),
his children, Teresa Tompkins of Murrieta, Calif, (Christopher), Lori Heitmann
of Chester, Neb. (Ward), Daniel Eggers of Costa Mesa, Calif. (Caren), and
Sheri Baxa of Salina, Kan. (Steve); 11 grandchildren, Ryan Howe, Heather
Cornett, Kristin Cottam, Jami Kassabaum, Emilie Long, Jennifer Eggers, Bradley
Eggers, Grant Eggers, Haley Killough, Drew Baxa, Derek Baxa; 13 great-grandchildren;
sisters-in-law, Ruby Eggers and Alice Eggers. Kenny was preceded in death
by his grandson, Kyle Andrew Heitmann; and his brothers, Eberhard Eggers
(Mae), Paul Eggers (Lenora), Walter Eggers, Max Eggers; and a sister, Gertrude
Mason (William).
Kenny was born in Byron, Neb., on Sept. 21, 1932, to Herman and Emilie Eggers,
the youngest of six siblings. He was raised in Byron and attended school
in Republic, Kan., graduating in 1950.
In 1953 Kenny joined the United States Navy and actively fought in the Korean
War aboard the U.S.S. Eversole. His service ended with an honorable discharge
in June 1955. He proudly received the Korean Service Medal (three stars),
the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the United Nations Service Medal,
the China Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal.
On Aug. 25, 1954, Kenny married the love of his life, Jo Ann Johnson of
Republic, Kan. In August 1957 they moved to Santa Ana, Calif., where he
got a job with the United States Postal Service. They remained in California,
moving to Garden Grove in 1960, where they continued to raise their family
until he retired. They left California and relocated to Nebraska in 1988.
Their final home was in Chester, Neb.
Kenny was always happy and had a great sense of humor. He was always glad
to see you and always had time to visit with you. He was an avid golfer.
He loved watching sports, reading the newspaper, and never missed reading
the "funny papers." He loved God and loved his church. He was
always busy and loved working in his garage or his garden. He loved his
family dearly and was a wonderful husband, great dad, grandpa, great-grandpa
and friend.
A funeral service was held at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, Neb.,
on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., with graveside service immediately
following at the Chester Cemetery.
Military graveside rites were conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard and
the American Legion State-Line Post No. 317, Hubbell, Neb.
Visitation was from 1 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, at the Bachelor-Surber
Funeral Home, Belleville, Kan., with the family greeting friends from 6
to 8 p.m.

Nellie Rathke
Nellie Guffin (Wheeler) Rathke, 89, of Walton, died Oct. 23. She was born
Dec. 29, 1928, in Emmet, Idaho, to William and Bessie (La Grande) Guffin.
In 1936, the family moved to Mankato, where Nellie became a member of the
Wesleyan Methodist Church.
Nellie married Wesley Mack Wheeler in 1949 and raised three sons in Topeka.
Wes preceded her in death in 1981. In 1982, Nellie married Leo Lorence Rathke
and moved to Emporia. She joined the Lutheran Church and added his four
children to her family. Leo preceded her in death in 2004.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.
Nellie became a DAR member in 1982 and served as chaplain until she returned
to Topeka in 2004.
Survivors include her children: Tony Wheeler, Mark Wheeler, Lance Wheeler,
Mrs. Bruce Clark (Theresa), Leo Junior Rathke, Mrs. Jeff Nemmers (Melody)
and Michael Rathke; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and siblings,
Walter, Sandra, David and Charisse.
Graveside service was last Monday at West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka.
Ladd Gharring
Graveside service for Ladd E. Gharring, 73, the son of Ivan and Verleen
(Whiteley) Gharring, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, at the
Nelson Cemetery. He died on Oct. 4 in York.
He is survived by his parents, Ivan and Verleen Gharring of Greenville,
Mich.; a sister, Dee Ann Piper of Sheridan, Mich.; and two nephews. Klawitter-Price
Funeral Home of Nelson is in charge of the arrangements.
Remington Elting
Remington Wells Elting, 28, of Davenport, died at Thayer County Health Services
in Hebron. The son of Kurtis and Susie (Enghauser) Elting, he was born Nov.
7, 1989, in Belleville.
Rem grew up in the Davenport area, attending St. Peter Lutheran School and
graduating from Bruning-Davenport High School with the Class of 2008. He
also attended Southeast Community College in Beatrice, and was a 2011 graduate
of the World Wide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, Iowa.
After college he did an internship at the Aurora Co-op in Carleton. He worked
for Elting Pivot Service, Thayer
County Department of Roads and RW's Dining and Drinks, before starting his
own business, Elting Seamless Gutters.
He helped friends with race cars and organized and attended road rallies.
He loved his family and friends, especially his nephew, Rexton. Rem had
a talent with all equipment. He could operate or drive anything. Rem was
a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedensau, where he was
baptized and confirmed. He was also a member of the Davenport Volunteer
Fire Department and drove the Thayer County Ambulance. He enjoyed fishing,
hunting and golf.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orval Elting, Robert Enghauser
and Maxine Needman.
He is survived by his parents, Kurtis and Susie Elting of Davenport; a brother,
Reuben Elting of Davenport; a nephew; grandmother, Esther Elting of Deshler;
uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Funeral was held Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedensau (rural
Hebron). Officiant was Pastor Jose Flores. Burial was in the Carleton Cemetery.
Alfred Mueller
Alfred Mueller, 83, of Superior, died Monday at Brodstone Memorial Hospital
in Superior. He was born Nov. 15, 1934, to Henry and Alma (Meyer) Mueller
in Thayer County, Neb., near Kiowa
Survivors include his daughter, Pam Poulos of Lincoln; son, Bruce Mueller
of Greeley, Colo.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces, nephews
other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Centennial Lutheran Church in
Superior, with Pastor Robert Hopkins officiating. Visitation will be 10
a.m. to 7 p.m.tomorrow (Friday), with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial
will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Superior. Williams Funeral Home of Superior
is in charge of the arrangements.
Alice Driggs
Alice Driggs, 84, of Bentonville, Ark., died Sept. 14. The daughter of Raymond
and Ruby (Hall) Ballard, she was born Dec. 2, 1933, near Republic.
She married Raymond Driggs on Jan. 5, 1964. To this union were born four
sons.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband and two siblings, Leonard
Ballard and Aleda Wenzel.
Survivors include her sons and their wives, Richard and Kathy, Dale and
Cindy, Larry and Lauri, and Dan and Susan, all of Bentonville; 11 grandchildren;
18 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Larine Driggs-Mckinney, Haskell,
Texas; Emma McKinney and Glenn Platt, both of Superior, David Platt of Kentucky,
Linda Cox and Marvin Platte of Hastings; and cousins, Betty Hall Gemmer
and Raymond Hall, both of Superior.
Her funeral was held Sept. 21 in Bentonville.
Anita Stone
Classmates of Anita (Williams) Stone have learned of her death. She was
a member of the Superior High School Class of 1965.
Virginia Roe
A longtime Superior area resident and former school teacher at Mankato,
Virginia Roe, died Monday.
